Adobe to drop support for InDesign CS5 and CS5.5

With the v32 release, scheduled for September 2014, users of InDesign CS5 or InDesign CS5.5 will no longer be able to directly create new folio files, or upload articles to the Folio Producer Service in DPS. InDesign CS6 and InDesign Creative Cloud users will be unaffected by the changes to DPS v32.

Adobe_LogoAdobe published the following FAQ.

If I am currently using InDesign CS5 or CS5.5 what is the impact?
When DPS v32 ships, Adobe will no longer deliver the Folio Producer tools installer and the Folio Builder panel installer that work with InDesign CS5 and CS5.5. If you are currently running InDesign CS5 or CS5.5 you will not be able to create folios or upload articles to the Folio Producer Service using the Folio Builder panel as it will no longer function in these older versions of InDesign.

You can continue to author, edit and preview InDesign source documents with DPS overlays in InDesign CS5 or CS5.5. However, source documents will then need to be saved and re-opened in InDesign CS6 or Creative Cloud to publish through the Folio Producer Service.

We highly encourage you to plan for your migration from InDesign CS5 and CS5.5 now.

How long will the DPS installers for InDesign CS5 and 5.5 continue to be available?
With the DPS v32 update in September, the Folio Builder panel installer will no longer be available. The DPS v31 Folio Producer tools installer will continue to be available for Mac OS and Windows.

What happens if I can’t upgrade to InDesign CC or InDesign CS6 by the v32 launch?
You can continue to author, edit and preview InDesign source documents with DPS overlays in InDesign CS5 or CS5.5. Source documents will then need to be saved and re-opened in InDesign CS6 or Creative Cloud to publish through the Folio Producer Service.

However, this is not a long term solution as there are several variables that need to be considered:

  • InDesign CS5 and CS5.5 do not package overlay resource links
  • When opening InDesign CS5 or 5.5 source files you would need to manually collect and move required assets to the correct file location
  • You would then need to relink and potentially rebuild any overlays that point to a specific asset

Ultimately, while you can continue to build overlays in InDesign CS5 and CS5.5 using the Folio Producer tools, this method is not recommended for the reasons stated above.

To efficiently publish DPS apps, Adobe highly recommends that you upgrade to InDesign CC or CS6.

How does this product change impact me if I am a WoodWing or vjoon K4 customer?
WoodWing and vjoon K4 pure EWS customers will see no impact. WoodWing and vjoon will continue to work for InDesign CS5 and CS5.5, however the creation of folios will be capped at v31. Pure refers to the vjoon customers using only the vjoon K4 user interface that do not also use the folio builder panel.

Hybrid WoodWing and K4 customers (those that do not disable Folio Builder panel and those using the Overlay Creator panel) are impacted. The Folio Builder Panel will no longer function in CS5 and CS5.5. v31 will be the last release for Overlay Creator panel and the Digital Publishing plugin for CS5 and CS5.5. There will be no updates or bug fixes to the Overlay Creator panel or Digital Publishing plugin for InDesign CS5 and CS5.5.

After I upgrade to Creative Cloud or InDesign CS6, do I need to do anything else?
Once you have upgraded to Creative Cloud or InDesign CS6, you will need to install the CC/CS6 DPS Desktop Tools for Mac OS or Windows. To do this, you have two installation options.

  1. In InDesign, go to Help>Updates. Select the DPS Desktop Tools option and click on Update.
  2. Go to the Installing DPS tools page and download and install the InDesign CC/CS6 DPS Desktop tools for your operating system.

After you install the appropriate desktop tools you can resume authoring content.
